Catherine Copeland
Parallel Narratives

Exhibition on view: April 19 - May 30, 2017

Gitana Rosa Gallery presents Parallel Narratives, a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Paterson-based artist Catherine Copeland.  The exhibition runs through May 30th, 2017, with a reception with the artist Sunday, April 30th, from 2-5.

The Parallel Narratives series was created between 2015 and 2017 from an historical industrial space overlooking downtown Paterson, NJ, where Copeland’s neighbors included rap artists, tattoo shops, metal workers, and a sex party business.  In the series, interactions with the building and its residents juxtapose and mingle with Copeland’s own personal narrative. Both confessional and journalistic, images seek to reveal something hidden, private, illicit…or otherwise misfit for public consumption.  A fascination with formal invention and love for the illuminating quality of oil paint underpins the work.

Founded in 2006 by Vanessa Liberati, Gitana Rosa exhibits contemporary art by leading emerging and established artists that encourage social, political and environmental messages. In 2014, Gitana Rosa opened a second location in Chelsea.  In 2016, the Gallery moved to Piermont, NY, where today it exhibits fine and functional art in a relaxed environment.
